Prince George, BC–More than 200 Canfor workers are anxiously awaiting a decision by Canfor’s executive on whether the North Central Plywood facility will be rebuilt. The mill burned to the ground in a fire in May.
According to a report by Opinion 250, Canfor’s board of directors will be presented with recommendations on what to do with the mill by the end of July. These recommendations will be handed down before the company releases its second quarter results. The report further noted that a significant amount of the more than 200 members of the Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canada Local 25 don’t qualify for the retirement bridging programs offered by the province, as the average age of the workers is 42, while the qualifying age is 55.
If Canfor does rebuild and restart the mill, the process is expected to take a year and a half. Opinion 250 further confirmed that benefits will have run out long before employees would be called back to work.
