Fire extinguished at Catalyst Paper’s Port Alberni paper mill

March 12, 2019 – A fire that occurred Monday at Catalyst Paper in Port Alberni, British Columbia has been extinguished and no injuries have been reported. 

Parksville Qualicum Beach News reports that the fire began in the dryer of the No. 4 paper machine around 8:30 am. Fire crews left the mill around 12:30 p.m.

Paper Excellence Canada, which announced intention to acquire Catalyst Paper in October 2018, takes ownership later this month.

Catalyst produces 1.3 million tonnes of pulp and paper products across three facilities in Port Alberni, Crofton and Powell River, B.C. It also runs a distribution centre in Surrey and head office in Richmond.
