The Timmins Times recently reported that due to extreme heat and dryness, Tembec has ceased all its logging operations. A total of 180 employees who work on the company’s area stretching from Manitouwage to Huntsville, will be laid off for an indefinite period of time. Contractors will be responsible for securing employment elsewhere for their workers. Activities involving ground preparation for next year’s tree plant have also been suspended.

In an interview with chief forester for Ontario operations Rick Groves, the Timmins Times reported that in these conditions, logging has great potential for igniting fires. Groves also confirmed that Tembec’s inventory is already squeezed and if logging operations are put off for much longer, the company’s mills will start to feel the effects.
