March 5, 2019 - FPInnovations is holding a one-day symposium on opportunities to strengthen the British Columbia bio-economy on Monday, March 11 in Vancouver.

With the Growing the Bioeconomy: Bio-sourced Materials for High-Tech Applications event, FPInnovations is collaborating with the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (FLNRORD) as well as academia and industry in exploring the opportunities in innovative bio-based products to grow B.C.’s bioeconomy.

Of primary interest are the development, testing and commercialization of sustainable forest-based biomaterials and innovative technologies for applications in construction, biomedicine, electronics and consumer goods.

These new and advanced forest biomass–based biomaterials have physical and chemical properties that can provide new manufacturing opportunities in B.C. that can displace petrochemical-based materials in products such as the plastics and polymers used in many industrial and consumer goods.

On the day's schedule are sessions on green chemistry and high-tech applications for nanocellulose and cellulose filaments. A panel session on R&D for bio-sourced materials and a series of 3D-printed demonstrations by students of the University of British Columbia and Kwantlen Polytechnic University round out the day.
